Salem, Missouri was Hofer's hometown. He came to the 4th FG by way of the RCAF and on his first mission with the 4th scored a victory. He was killed in action on 2 July 1944 while on a shuttle mission. "Salem Representative" was coded QP L serial number 42-106924. A P-47 of Hofer's also was coded QP L but was named "The Missouri Kid" and "Show Me".
